the best part was our trip to the spiral jetty, but i don't have all the pics for that yet, so i'll share our adventure from Sunday afternoon first.
My family has been big into the whole emergency preparedness thing lately. for Christmas we all gave gifts that could be used in case of an emergency. so, my brother Troy wanted to try dutch oven cooking to see what we could whip up and what it would taste like. kind of like a trial and error run before the real thing.
so we gathered at my parent's house and we all brought our dutch ovens and patience.
these are our list of ingredients: many duthc ovens and lids.
the menu was: beans, rice and soup, rolls (using our supply of wheat storage, of course) and cobbler - we threw that in for dessert but wouldn't probably really have it in an emergency.
don't forget the solar powered oven. troy recently bought it and wanted to see if it could do the job. (the rolls worked better in this oven than they did in the dutch oven. nice 'n fluffy)
first, get your briquettes started. this took the most time cause no one thought to bring lighter fluid. lighter fluid = flames in no time. put that on the list of needed ingredients for a successful emergency.
then you have to put everything in the ovens. notice the bowl of bread dough on the ground that was ready to spill out.
then take a picture of the brother-in-law admiring the festivities from a distance.
at this point in time we were about 2+ hours into the whole shebang. the food was starting to cook and everyone was really hungry by now. notice in the picture we had 5 ovens and 1 solar powered oven going. yowsers.
stir once in a while so the food doesn't burn to the bottom.....
check the beans to see if they're still hard as a rock.
yep.
they are.
keep cookin'.
don't forget to throw your empty cans into the nearest flower pot for easy storage.
speaking of throwing, here's a great shot of Zane throwing Carter into a snow pile after Carter threw a snowball at zane.
and voila! 3 hours later here is your emergency preparedness meal.
you've got your bean medley, rice and soup mixture, and rolls.
and don't forget the cobbler.
that was my addition. i tried a new recipe and everyone liked it. i had to go to sunday dinner #2 so i grabbed some to eat later. i'll try it today and report back on how well it turned out.
i think the best part about dutch oven cooking is being able to smell all of the smells coming out of the ovens and seeing it all come together for some good times. the classic line was when we were all dishing up our food and chase said to his dad "hey dad, is there chicken?". uh.....no. not today. this is a test, an emergency preparedness test and no one brought chicken. cause in an emergency we wouldn't have chicken, right?

That's a great idea! I suck at being prepared. You'll have to give us some of your dutch oven tips so we can practice our "emergency" dinner, too.
